Apostille Education
California Apostille Requirements
Obtaining a California apostille means meeting the requirements set by the California Secretary of State. Documents that do not meet these requirements are often rejected, causing delays and extra costs.
Original vs certified copies
Vital records such as birth, marriage, and death certificates must be certified copies issued by the county or the California Department of Public Health. Photocopies and notarized photocopies are generally not accepted.
Notarization requirements
If your document must be notarized before apostille, the notarization must be complete and properly worded. California requires specific notarial wording for acknowledgments and jurats. A notary must also include the correct notarial seal and signature.
Documents in foreign languages
Documents in a language other than English can often be apostilled, but the notarial certificate may need to be in English if the document is notarized in California. We can advise you on the best approach.
Where to file
California apostilles are processed by the California Secretary of State in Sacramento and Los Angeles. Processing times vary depending on whether you choose standard or expedited service.
